Abstract

Perchloroethylene (PERC) is an industrial solvent commonly used in dry cleaning, associated with reproductive risks and neurological development effects. Despite its potential to accumulate in breast milk, its current labeling does not include the H362 hazard statement under the Globally Harmonized System (GHS). This article analyzes the GHS criteria and the available scientific evidence regarding PERC exposure during breastfeeding, emphasizing its bioaccumulation and adverse effects observed in animal offspring. Although human data remain limited, there is a clear need for preventive measures, the promotion of longitudinal studies, and the consideration of PERC substitution to protect vulnerable populations, especially breastfeeding women and infants.
